The United States has been facing a grave threat in recent years – the giant killer wasp, known as the “murder hornet.” This formidable insect, which is the largest and most dangerous of its kind, arrived in the country in 2019, and it has been causing panic ever since.

The latest sighting of this menacing creature occurred in Washington state in 2021. This discovery shocked the region as the “murder hornet” displayed its aggressive behavior by attacking anything in its path. Measuring an imposing 4.4 centimeters in length, it was found just 3.2 kilometers from where it was first identified in December 2019, near Blaine, Washington, according to the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA).

As the frightening nickname suggests, these hornets are highly skilled at wiping out entire beehives. With their powerful jaws, they can kill and decapitate thousands of bees, taking over the hive as their own. They mercilessly tear apart the brood to feed their offspring, leaving behind devastation and despair.

But that’s not all – the venom from a single sting of the “murder hornet” has the potential to be fatal for humans. These vicious insects inject a significant amount of venom into their prey. While human fatalities from a single sting are rare, the risk is still alarming.

In response to this alarming development, the WSDA is taking action to combat the threat. They are setting up live traps in the area and plan to tag captured wasps to track them back to their nests. Officials in the US-Canada border region have also installed additional traps to prevent the further spread of these deadly insects.
